After Catharina Restaurant’s impressive 21 year run, it was time for a new dining spot on the Steenberg Wine Estate – and Tryn Restaurant is a fitting addition to the property. Headed up by Chef Kerry Kilpin, the refreshed, contemporary restaurant space is again named after Steenberg’s 17th Century Founder Catharina Ras, but this time her nickname, Tryn.

“My team and I are very excited about bringing Catharina into the 21st century with the opening of Tryn, and creating a dining experience that is more connected to her free and feisty spirit,” says Steenberg Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin.

The restaurant, which is set to open on the 2nd of September, is a mix of solid timber and stone, textured fabrics and wall effects, with bold flashes of colour throughout. There’s a central bar in the heart of the restaurant, as well as a terrace overlooking the vineyards.

As for the menu, Chef Kerry Kilpin has created a showcase of fresh local ingredients, highlighted with Asian, Middle Eastern and traditional South African flavours. There’ll be favourite meat cuts, sustainable fish and vegetarian choices available, as well as a dessert menu that features some unexpected savoury notes such as basil, coriander, thyme and cardamom.
