Sun International’s legendary Sun City resort officially turned 40 in spectacular style with a line-up of top South African bands and artists performing at what will be remembered as one of the most memorable parties of the South African summer of 2019. Exactly 40 years to the day since Sun City opened its doors on 7 December 1979, partygoers showed up in their masses to celebrate the milestone.
Not even the consistent rain could dampen the occasion or the spirit of the revelers. The Big 40 Birthday Party, originally to take place on the beach at the Valley of Waves, was moved to Sun City’s versatile and expansive Sun Park where the likes of Shekhinah, Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels, Kurt Darren, Mi Casa and AKA performed for party-goers. Local band, Soulmajestik, and Sun City’s very own Segaetsho Dynasty also had a platform to share a stage with these top South African artists. The party also featured a special lively production in-between the artist’s performances showcasing the resort’s history, culminating with a dazzling fireworks display that lit up the skies for over 10 minutes.
The celebrations then moved to the expansive Sun Arena (previously the Superbowl) for a thumping after party with Goodluck, Kwesta, Sho Madjozi, Prince Kaybee, DJ Christos, Vinny da Vinci and DJ Tira in the mix, and featuring Somizi as the MC. His grand entrance at Sun Arena was a spectacle. In true SomGaga’s style, there were dancers wearing LED glasses flashing with Somizi’s name while Sho Madjozi’s John Cena song and had the crowds going crazy.
During the After party at the Sun Park, Sun International’s Chief Executive Anthony Leeming cut a giant, 1.8 metre birthday cake as confetti burst into the air. The crowd enthusiastically sang “Happy Birthday” to Sun International’s oldest resort.
“Sun City turned 40 in grandiose fashion, with some of South Africa’s very best artists and the resort’s biggest fans there to celebrate. We thank the artists, bands and our guests for making Sun City’s Big 40 Birthday Party bigger than we could ever have imagined.
“Although the rain put a stop to our planned beach party, rain plan was called and with perfect synergy and without a hitch, the show went on in spectacular style at the Sun Park. It just goes to show that the party goes on at Sun City, no matter what. We have a most capable team and the most versatile venues to accommodate every eventuality.
“A special word of appreciation goes out to our employees and all of the teams who worked behind the scenes to make our Big 40 celebrations so memorable,” says Mike van Vuuren, General Manager at Sun City.
