The reigning international bartender of the year, Joe Schofield, will be travelling to South Africa to take host exclusive masterclasses as well as fundraising guest shifts, with money raised going to his charity of choice – Beyond Bars Akademia. You’ll find him at Cause & Effect in Cape Town and Sin + Tax in Joburg, on the 29th of June and 1st July respectively.

Known for his conceptual take on cocktails, the Manchester-based mixologist’s trip is in partnership with spirits business Beam Suntory. Schofield is a big name in mixology circles, having won the aforementioned Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards’ International Bartender of The Year 2018 as well as the title of Bartenders’ Bartender at the World’s 50 Best Bars 2018.

While working in Singapore, he co-created 12 unique cocktails for the Tippling Club, each of which used carefully created scents to trigger memories and emotions. In 2018 he was approached by Beam Suntory to collaborate with their Blends of the World tour, which saw him travel to Australia to offer inspiring seminars to aspiring bartenders.

So what will Schofield be up to while in South Africa? On 29 June, Schofield will be in Cape Town for two masterclasses for local bartenders that will both be held at Cause & Effects’ new venue at the V&A Waterfront followed by hosting a guest shift at Cause & Effect Bar from 7PM until late. Guests of the bar can then enjoy demonstrations and servings of four signature cocktails each uniquely blended with Beam Suntory spirits such as Auchentoshan Whisky, Roku Gin and Maker’s Mark Bourbon Whisky.

On the 1st of July, he’ll travel North to Joburg’s Sin + Tax bar, to again offer two masterclasses as well as a guest shift from 7PM. “We want to show the world what sheer talent exists in the cocktail industry, and cannot wait for South Africa to get the chance to experience the utter ingenuity of Joe Schofield,” shares Beam Suntory’s Managing Director, Mark Pockele.
