The South African leg of the Global Pizza Challenge held its 10th annual competition in style this year! The Challenge was held at Hotel Show Africa over three days, showcasing pizzas in a number of different categories with a slew of prizes for the winners.

Adding extra recognition for the winners of the Best Pizza and Best Vegan Pizza categories is that their pizzas will be available at Perfect Pizza restaurants nationwide, with sales raising funds for Hot 91.9FM Cares and Dream to be a Chef Foundation.

Here are the winners for the 2019 Global Pizza Challenge:

  • Global Pizza Challenge Champion: William Maimela
  • Best Vegan Pizza: Matt Bronkhorst
  • Best Dessert Pizza: Ana Agraz
  • Best Hygiene Practice Award: Dlamini Mandisa

William Maimela walks away with the title of Champion as well as R15 000, and Matt Bronkhorst and Dlamini Mandisa, winners of the Best Vegan Pizza and Best Hygiene Practice awards, receive R10 000 and R5 000 respectively.

The competition is organised by Chef Martin Kobald – ChefMLK (Vice President – Worldchefs ) and Chef Jeff Schueremans (past chairman of the Academy of Chefs), with a number of chefs helping to judge the pizzas over the three days.  Huge congratulations to all of the winners!
