The Dream to be a Chef Foundation was kickstarted by Chef Martin Kobald, Vice President World Chefs and a Past President of the SA Chefs Association. “The foundation has a simple objective- provide financial support to our aspiring chefs who have a dream of becoming a chef, however, are not able to fund the training costs” says Chef Martin.
When asked why he decided to start the Foundation, Chef Martin says “As you know I run ChefMLK School of Cooking. Over time we realised that there are a lot of potential chefs out there but unfortunately most of them will never get to be a part of our industry, purely because they do not have the funds to pay for the necessary schooling that goes with becoming a qualified Chef.”
So how will the Foundation work? The first step is to raise funds, and current initiatives include
- Industry Gala Dinners and Events
- Global Pizza Challenge / Perfect Pizza Campaigns
- Radio Campaigns Hot 91.9 FM (Part of the Hot care Initiative)
- Television Campaigns and Interviews
- Kilimanjaro Hike
- Crowd Funding Campaigns
After enough money has been raised, Martin says that the next step will be to select the candidates. “We will do intake interviews after we receive applications and motivation letters, completing a fully comprehensive background check on all the candidates,” says Martin. “We will be accepting applications from all over South Africa and have selected a variety of cooking schools from around the country – I am in the process of making deals with them to get the best price and best training.”
Martin is calling on Industry to get involved. “We desperately need the support from the entire Hospitality industry. At this stage mainly as mentors, service / training providers for possible apprenticeships, and as our custodians for the program going forward, and of course for funding,” says Martin.
