The Table Bay has four young food and wine enthusiasts competing in the 2019 Distell Inter Hotel Challenge – one of the hospitality industry’s major showcases of food, wine and spirits pairing. Representing Sun International’s five-star hotel on the culinary aspects is newly appointed Sous Chef, Kurt de Wet.
The multi-faceted challenge, sponsored by Cape Legends Fine Wines, is a respected platform for highlighting the talent and expertise of trainees, and giving them an opportunity to shine.
Kurt “I am very excited to have the chance to compete against some of the very best aspiring chefs from across South Africa. It is a great opportunity to test my abilities and network with likeminded people. If I win this competition, it will certainly help to put my name on the map.”
Kurt was born and raised in Cape Town and describes himself as an innovative chef who loves to experiment with ingredients and flavours. He was drawn to the culinary industry not only for the food and his love of cooking but also by the culture, and the diverse and often crazy personalities that the industry tends to attract.
“Honestly it is the craziness, the daily adrenalin rush, and being able to take the simplest ingredients and turn them into a masterpiece that continues to inspire me. Of course, there are challenges. But, when you get difficult guests, the reward that no money can buy is when you see that smile on their face as they take that first bite,” says de Wet who joined The Table Bay three months ago.
He studied at Northlink college and completed his in service training at Maize restaurant, One and Only and at 15 on Orange hotel. During his career, he has been lucky to work in most of the top ten hotels in South Africa and alongside the likes of Chef David Higgs, Michael Mayepa and other renowned chefs.
He will be mentored on the food aspects by Keshan Rambarun during the 2019 Cape Legends Inter Hotel Challenge. The other participants representing The Table Bay in the challenge are Jonathon Wakefield (Sommelier candidate), Dalise Stynfaard (Bakery candidate) and Bradley Solomons (Concierge candidate).
They will participate in several workshops in the lead up to the Western Cape Regional competition when they will compete against teams from other prestigious hotels.
