Van Ryn’s Distillery, close to Stellenbosch, has been judged a national winner in the 2009 South African Tourism Welcome Awards, it was announced at Indaba’s gala ceremony in May, attended by key players from the country’s tourism industry.
Van Ryn’s won in the meetings, exhibition and special events (MESE) category, and was selected for the outstanding quality of its tasting offerings, its tours, service and luxury facilities. Last year, the distillery was awarded a five-star grading by the SA Tourism Grading Council in the same category.
The distillery has achieved international renown and is widely regarded as the South African industry flagship. Van Ryn’s has won the Worldwide Best Brandy Award on the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London on three occasions, including last year. In 2008, it also won the Best Brandy Trophy on the International Spirits Challenge.
Receiving the 2009 Welcome Award, Nichole Solomons of Van Ryn’s said: “We have tried to create an experience 
that befits our luxury brandies, where people can literally immerse themselves in the world of the unique and the hand-crafted, where passion and skill are reflected in everything we do.
“Our plush and deluxe environment mirrors the sumptuousness of our brandies. We strive to express the depth of expertise that underpins every one of our brandies and to show this in every facet of our operations, from the person pouring the welcoming drink to the guide leading the tour of our facilities, from the cooper who assembles our fine French barrels in which our brandies are aged to the person packaging the brandy and accessories that visitors buy before they leave.”
Van Ryn’s is South Africa’s only brandy distillery with a dedicated cooperage, where specialist coopers show visitors how vats made from French oak are assembled. The barrels are used to age its prized brandies.
Situated just 35 minutes’ drive from Cape Town, along the banks of the Eerste River, Van Ryn’s Distillery produces the four-piece Reserve Collection Range, comprising 10, 12, 15 and 20 year-old connoisseur brandies. All four have earned international acclaim.
