Signage

From the signage out front your restaurant introducing your latest menu additions and current specials to table tents and menu boards, window decals and signs on restroom doors, there is no doubting that signs are everywhere as far as today’s restaurants are concerned.

While you may think that signage is a relatively insignificant detail in the overall operation of a restaurant, they can in actual fact have a huge impact on the image you project. It is crucial to understand the importance of signage as well as printed POS materials to promote your establishment’s key messages.

When designing signage, bear the following in mind:

• Whether or not your signs are consistent with your brand. Signs comprise more than just words, so you should ensure they convey the same image you want customers to associate with your establishment. Before worrying about the message on it, think about how the sign should look in order to fit in with your image.

• Ask yourself what the purpose of your sign is. Remember that signs do not only reflect the image you would like to project but also communicate information about your business. They can greatly change the purchasing behaviour of your clientele.

• What length of time the sign will be in use for. If it will be lengthy, consider a sign with changeable type, or perhaps a sign in a window. These are effective in encouraging a variation from a customer’s consumption patterns and come at an affordable price.

• The importance of the material from which the signage is made and the effects of the environment on this. Different materials suit different environments, some much better than others. Materials include card, foam, plastic, styrene, vinyl, fabric, wood and glass. If the signage will be positioned outside, ensure it can be able to withstand moisture, sunlight, wind, and fluctuating temperatures. If the signage is intended for the interior of your restaurant, make sure the materials stand up to cleaning and complement the décor.

• The best way in which to attract the attention of customers. Options for signage include window decal, banners, flags, posters, table covers, static clings, mobiles, pamphlets, floor decals, packaging, light boxes, and motorised signs among others. Consider this carefully and choose the best option for your restaurant.

• Where the sign will be positioned in relation to the customer. Put yourself in the customers’ position – will the sign be easily visible, quickly understood and its message clear?
Whether or not your signage makes sense. Test the message of the sign on an impartial observer before putting it into production and spending the money, as a sign always makes sense to the one who made it. Ensure your message is concise and clear, as well as grammatically correct.
