Setting Up a Home Bar

Setting up a home bar is a fun and easily doable job; if the infrastructure is there all you need is a little flair to get you going. Now, in any home bar you don’t want to stock too many items, as most of these will just sit there collecting dust. The best thing to do is set up a mini cocktail bar, stocking all the fundamentals and serving three or four cocktails.

Start with the following equipment, all of which can be purchased from Thirst Flair cc:
1. Boston shaker tin and Boston mixing glass
2. Ice scoop and ice bucket
3. Hawthorne strainer
4. Bar spoon
5. Jigger (tot measurer)
6. Pouring mat
7. Speed pourers
8. Blender

Now, once the bar is stocked with equipment, let’s look at what we can do about the drinks that you as the almighty host will be serving to your very thirsty guests. In terms of drinks, we recommend only stocking one or two bottles of each base spirit and perhaps a few liqueurs to suit your little cocktail menu. The following alcohols, liqueurs, cordials, juices and wines should ideally be:
1. Scotch whisky (Bells or J&B)
2. American or bourbon whisky (Jack Daniels or Jim Beam)
3. Irish whisky (Jamesons)
4. Brandy (Klipdrift or Riecheleu)
5. Vodka (Smirnoff or Absolut)
6. Gin (Gilbeys or Gordons)
7. Dark Rum (Captain Morgan or Red Heart)
8. Light Rum (Bacardi or Havana club)
9. Tequila gold and silver(Jose Cuervo)
10. Blue Curacao
11. Malibu
12. Triple sec
13. Cherry liqueur
14. Galliano
15. Archers peach schnapps
16. Strawberry liqueur
17. Lime cordial
18. Passion fruit cordial
19. Grenadine
20. Strawberry juice
21. Orange juice
22. Pineapple juice
23. Dry and semi-sweet white wine, and red wine
Of course, there are many other alcohols and liqueurs that you can stock in your home bar but for the purpose of this exercise, we are trying to keep things as simple as possible. Now, with all the stock that we have in the bar, let’s figure out a cocktail menu to go along with our suggestions:
1. Strawberry Daiquiri
2. Harvey Wallbanger
3. Margarita
4. Strawberry Gimlet
5. Sex on the Beach
6. Cherry Gimlet

And a shooters menu:
1. Suitcase
2. Briefcase
3. Tequila

All right, so we now have a little cocktail menu going, all we thus need is the cocktail recipe breakdown and method of making. Never be intimidated about making cocktails; many people start sweating when the word cocktail is mentioned but in reality, cocktails are no harder to make than say, a brandy and coke. If you know the method and the appearance then you will be fine.

Strawberry Daiquiri:
Method: Blended
Ingredients: 1 shot Bacardi
1 shot strawberry liqueur
1 shot lime cordial
3 shots strawberry juice
Glass:  Try for a good looking, curvy glass

Harvey Wallbanger:
Method: Build – just pour the ingredients in until full
Ingredients: 1 shot of vodka, top with orange juice, and float ½ shot of Galliano
Glass: A regular tall glass will do

Margaita:
Method: Blended for best results
Ingredients: 1 shot gold tequila, 1 shot triple sec, 1 shot lemon juice, 1 shot sugar syrup
Glass: The margarita is always served in a margarita glass
Tip:  Add a dash of blue Curacao to the drink to make a blue margarita

Strawberry and Cherry gimlet:
Method: Build
Ingredients: 1 shot of either strawberry or cherry liqueur, 1 shot lime, 1 shot vodka
Glass: Tumbler glass

Sex On The Beach: An old classic, best served at sunset
Method: Build
Ingredients: A dash of grenadine, 1 shot of vodka ½ Malibu and ½ peach schnapps, then fill the glass with ½ orange juice and ½ pineapple juice
Glass: Use a stemmed cocktail glass for this cocktail

A good thing to remember with your home bar is to give it a personality; make the people who sit at your bar feel welcome and homely. Add photos, funny posters or flags; whatever makes it your own. Steel and glass will sometimes make the bar feel a little cold so we recommend using wooden structures.

Good luck and start serving!
