It is not necessary to run an expensive advertising campaign in order to attract customers. The following are suggestions to raising awareness about the nature of your business and build customer loyalty in a cost-effective manner.

• Get listed – on online directories and websites, in the Yellow Pages, in tourism guides and entertainment guides, and in all printed relevant literature. Make it easy for those looking, to find you.

• Talk to your clientele – ask them how they heard about you and assess which marketing plan worked the best, and which listing source proved most effective. Follow up on ways to take advantage of those markets that worked the best.

• Use technology – build a website, even a simple one. Make sure you include a menu, directions to your establishment and contact information. Ensure you submit your site to search engines so that people can find it easily.

• Ask customers for their email addresses and build your own client list. Keep them up-to-date on news, events, specials and promotions at your establishment. Offer them deals and incentives through online-only promotions. Respect people’s need for privacy, however, and offer them the chance to remove themselves from your mailing list should they wish.

• Involve yourself in the surrounding community – find ways to make a difference – it pays dividends in customer goodwill.

• Cultivate referrals – never underestimate the power of word-of-mouth advertising. Offer better service and innovation than your competition and ask your customers to send word out to others if they enjoyed their dining experience. If they enjoy your restaurant, chances are good they will want you to succeed.

•  Be different and distinctive – don’t always play by the rules, after all, you would like to be remembered, would you not?

• Be straightforward – especially in terms of advertising. If you advertise something, it is your duty to fulfil that promise or offer. Always be honest and avoid fine print. All of this will build better customer trust.

• Be confident – show your success by believing in your business and hiring staff who believe in it too. Project this confidence.
