Fresh New Protea Hotel Victoria Junction Re-Opened Its Doors on September 1st

The Protea Hotel Victoria Junction originally opened its doors in 1996 and quickly became known as one of the most innovative Hotels in Cape Town. Built in an industrial style, the decor included some quirky film set themes that made the hotel very popular with film and production houses.

2011 saw a complete refurbishment of the Hotel, reclaiming its reputation as a trendsetter! Technology and an environmental awareness also formed a large part of the motivation to renovate the Hotel in its entirety. Situated in the urban landscape of Greenpoint, one of Cape Town’s up and coming suburbs, the location offers easy access to major Cape Town tourist attractions as well as the CBD, the Cape Town Convention Centre and the V&A Waterfront for GUESTS staying on business.

The hotel was shut in May for a four-month total make-over and opened on time on the 1st of September 2011.

“The project has seen the refurbishment of all 148 standard rooms and 24 loft rooms, as well as an extensive refurbishment of the restaurant, reception and other public areas on the ground floor,” said General Manager Pieter Buitendag. “We’re immensely excited about the reopening on September 1.”

The revamp includes new walk-in “rain showers” and will reflect modern design trends and lends substantially more light to the in-room experience. Technology and environmental factors were also included in the planning. Guests can look forward to Bravia LCD screens, iPod docking stations, international adaptor installations and bathrooms that feature more environmentally friendly fixtures. Standard features include air-conditioning, a choice of pillows, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a digital safe.

The new restaurant and bar will re-establish the location as a trend-setting style pioneer featuring a lighter open-plan, free-flowing space. The new food and beverage offering will also cater more for locals as the Tapas styled menu makes for social dining in an informal setting. The extensive wine by the glass list at extremely reasonable prices will also find favour with Capetonians on the hunt for that perfect after-work get-together, or simply a meeting place over a great cappuccino or some tapas. The menu includes some innovative organic wines & cocktails which look set to become trademarks, and guests can then work them off in the brand new gym.

Protea Hospitality Group Director of Sales, Marketing and Revenue, Danny Bryer, said the Protea Hotel Victoria Junction had long been a Cape Town landmark because of its modern theme and location, which was within easy walking distance of the Cape Quarter, the Cape Town Stadium and the V&A Waterfront.”This is one of more than a dozen hotels in the Protea Hospitality Group portfolio that have undergone renovations in the past year and will bring it in line with modern design trends and GUEST expectations,” Bryer said.

As part of the Green Point urban renewal programme for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, property owners the Hospitality Property Fund felt that it was time to redefine the hotel in the market place. The make-over of the Protea Hotels Victoria Junction sees the precinct regeneration come full circle.

“We’re looking forward seeing one of our Cape Town crown jewels transformed into a sleek new beauty ready to welcome the world,” Bryer said.
