Distinguished Canadian wine critic, prize-winning author and sommelier, Natalie MacLean, whose NatDecants blog has a global following, has given the thumbs-up to two Nederburg wines from the Winemaster’s Reserve collection, the 2007 Shiraz and 2008 Sauvignon Blanc, now offered in North America.
She calls the Shiraz “smooth and delicious and likes its “toasty oak and black fruit on the nose with a rich palate of ripe blackberries, cassis and plums.” Of the Sauvignon blanc, she says its “grassy goodness fills the glass and invites you to full refreshment with every sip.”
MacLean, whose main readership is in the US, and who also writes columns for many international wine, travel and lifestyle publications, won a Gourmand World Cookbook Award for her popular Red, White and Drunk all Over and is a four-time winner of the prestigious James Beard Foundation Journalism Award.
“We are always gratified by international acknowledgement. It provides a useful navigation tool to winelovers in helping them choose from so many options available to them,” says marketing manager for the brand, Rudolph du Toit. “People want value now more than ever and that is measured not merely on price but on the quality you get. It’s the reason why Nederburg is still growing in popularity and why it continues to do so well even in wine-producing countries such as Australia and New Zealand.”
Both wines are stocked by local wine retailers. The Shiraz sells for around R60 a bottle and the Sauvignon blanc for around R45.
