In the same week that Nederburg emerged as the most successful producer on the highly prestigious 2009 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, the winery has been voted top of the list in the 2009 Syrah du Monde. The highest scoring wine on the event, held in Ampuis, France, was Nederburg’s 2006 vintage of the Private Bin R121 Shiraz, made for sale exclusively on the Nederburg Auction.
The wine was one of only two from South Africa on the top ten list, dominated by the French. Close on 400 wines from 27 countries were tasted with just 35 gold medals awarded.
At the same time as Nederburg continues to build its global reputation for dessert wines, Razvan Macici and his team are strengthening their international reputation for Shiraz. Earlier this year, the 2007 Manor House Shiraz won gold on the Berliner Wein Trophy Show. The 2005 Manor House Shiraz was judged the world’s best expression of this varietal on the 2007 International Wine & Spirit Competition in London to bring home the coveted Rosemount Trophy traditionally taken by the Australians. The same wine also took gold on the inaugural Syrah du Monde and MUNDUSVini in Germany.
Last year, the 2006 Winemaster’s Reserve Shiraz won the 2008 Lexus Shiraz Challenge run in association with WINE magazine.
