NEDERBURG RELEASES ITS 2008 VINTAGE MICRO-CUVÉE INGENUITY WHITE
The 2008 vintage of Ingenuity, Nederburg’s bold yet nuanced eight-way white blend, has just been released. Like its impressive 2007 predecessor that earned a five-star rating in the Platter South African Wines guide, its Sauvignon blanc component comes from vineyards in Groenekloof and Durbanville. Representing a quarter of the final assemblage, it lends fresh, grassy aromas and structure, while Semillon, upped from the previous 6% to 19% of the blend, enhances the wine’s freshness, minerality and textured mouthfeel, says Tariro Masayiti.
“What makes Ingenuity White so exciting to drink, is that it is full of the unexpected. It’s commanding yet subtle. You’ll find a bracing tang of acidity matched by exuberant fruit flavours tempered by wood.”
All eight components were individually vinified before blending, with selective exposure to French oak imparting depth and complexity of character, he says.
This time round, Ingenuity’s other major players are Chardonnay (25,4 %) and Nouvelle (12,5%), followed by Viognier, super-ripe bush-vine Chenin blanc, Rhine Riesling and a soupçon of Muscadel to round out its flavours.
Masayiti says a tiny portion of the Sauvignon blanc was fermented in French barriques to augment the creaminess of the Chardonnay, that was entirely fermented and aged in new, top-of-the-line French 228-litre barrels, while the Nouvelle spent five months in second-fill French oak.
“Ingenuity White’s abundant layering of flavours but refined structure makes it an excellent food wine. It is certainly delicious served solo but it really is meant to be enjoyed with food to give its full due. When well-chilled it shows a crisp Sauvignon blanc profile but when lightly chilled, the creamy oak vanillins become more pronounced,
with notes of spice and some tannin.
“Its fusion of mineral, floral and wood characters pairs well with both red and white meat, especially when seasoned with aromatic spices and fruit. I’ve enjoyed it with quail, duck, guinea fowl, fillet and lamb.
