More to Montecasino

Fourteen years ago, the 26 hectares that are now home to the enthralling Southern Sun Montecasino hotel and the Montecasino entertainment complex, were barren land. Hard to imagine. It is precisely this bold sense of imagination that has led to the development of Montecasino as it stands today. And the complex’s new alluring additions, including a gracious four-star hotel and impressive office and conference space, augment the already expansive precinct.

Montecasino encapsulates the story of faraway places, imbuing a sense of romance, vibrancy and charm evident in towns throughout Italy. Its latest features – a hotel and a business district - continue this story. The Southern Sun Montecasino hotel, adds 194 bedrooms to the Montecasino complex, and a 1 400m² conference centre. It also includes multi-use basement parking for 1 000 cars.

“Montecasino has been developed as a walled Tuscan Village surrounded by a sprawling town along its natural watercourse,” explains Kevin Page, Development Director for the Tsogo Sun Group. “Over time, the site has called for continued expansion in various pockets – each development supporting the walled town with its casino and internally themed entertainment complex. The south east side of the site – nestled between the multi storey parkade, the eastern entrance and the Teatro (theatre) lay a pocket of land perfectly suited for multi-use development.”

And so The Pivot arose, aptly named for Tsogo Sun’s influence in rendering Fourways a viable, attractive business and recreation hub. The four star Southern Sun Montecasino hotel, with 97 double/double rooms, 94 standard rooms, 1 room for physically challenged guests and 2 studio suites, will service the sport and leisure market; while the conference centre will be perfectly poised to cater to the day conference package market and small conference and meeting business. The hotel will officially open at the end of April 2010.

“The aesthetic of the hotel and fuses old world charm with new additions,” says Page. The chic hotel, modeled on the Palazzo Corsini, built at the end of the 15th century on the slope between Gianicolo and the Tiber in Italy, reflects design as it was then, while simultaneously rooting the building in the now. “The structure encompasses a dichotomy between the past and the present, incorporating elements that bear testimony to the spirit of Venice: stone, handcrafted oak furniture, glass, stainless steel, pewter and wrought iron,” he says. The hotel’s specialty restaurant Punchinello’s, which seats 120 people, also beautifully captures this theme.

“Inspired by Italian, Mediterranean and Arabic tastes that have influenced Venetian cuisine, Punchinellos showcases Southern Sun’s culinary talents, while reflecting the prominent theme of the interconnection between food and dreams,” says Southern Sun’s Brand Development Chef, David van Staden. “The restaurant’s unique open kitchen emphasises this and reinforces our objective of creating a connection with our customers.”

The hotel’s crisp and smart aesthetic melds perfectly with the patina characteristic of a bygone era. It is an unusual synchronicity, culminating in a handcrafted showpiece – a pivot - designed to represent Tsogo Sun’s almost unimaginable footprint and influence. Where once upon a time there was nothing, now, each month, one million people visit Montecasino. Hard to imagine, but true.
