Razvan Macici, who has brought home for Nederburg two of the world’s most important Shiraz prizes, has created a singular micro-cuvée from this varietal to mark the 35th anniversary of the Nederburg Auction and 350 years of wine at the Cape in 2009. Just 300 litres of the 2007 Shiraz from a single vineyard block in Philadelphia have been made for the Charity Auction that will immediately follow the Nederburg Auction on Saturday, September 12.
Winner of the Rosemount Estate trophy for the world’s best Shiraz on the 2007 International Wine & Spirit Competition and top scorer in the 2009 Syrah du Monde, Macici has named his special wine Tribute. “We want to honour all the legendary names in winemaking who have shaped Nederburg’s history and been our inspiration, names like Johann Graue and Günter Brözel, in particular. Of course, we also want to acknowledge the many other great names in the annals of South African winemaking,” says Macici, who is donating the wine to be sold in aid of the Nederburg Charity Trust.
“We have three sets of wine for the auction. Each will be sold as a single lot and will include 8 bottles, ranging in size from the standard 750ml to the 18 litre Melchior. There’s a magnum, double magnum, jereboam, rehoboam, imperial, Methuselah, Balthazar and more. Every bottle within each set will be individually boxed. However, for those who want to buy a single bottle only, we shall have 30 individual 3-litre bottles on offer.”
Tribute’s hand-picked and hand-sorted fruit, which comes from the same block as the Rosemount trophy winner, is “rich in colour with a wonderful balance between ripe tannins, fruit and acidity”, says Macici and has spent 24 months in new wood.
Nederburg brand manager Dè-Mari Kellerman says all the funds raised will be divided equally amongst the three beneficiaries of the Nederburg Charity Trust. They are the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa, Organ Donor Foundation and an AIDS-HIV-support NGO, Mothers2Mothers.
