Lomond Pincushion an international favourite

Lomond Pincushion Sauvignon BlancLomond Pincushion Sauvignon BlancLomond’s 2009 Pincushion Sauvignon Blanc was one of South Africa’s top ten performers at London’s recent International Wine Challenge (IWC), winning a gold medal, following on its five- star rating in the 2010 Platter’s South African Wine Guide.

The single-vineyard wine, named for the pincushion protea found on the Gansbaai estate, exhibits a ripe tropical medley of fruit flavours, tempered by notes of minerality and a lively freshness, says viticulturist Wayne Gabb. “In this single block alone, there is a tremendous diversity lending considerable depth and complexity to the wine. Soils vary from deep and sandy to relatively shallow and structured, while altitudes range from 16 metres to 264 metres above sea level.”

He says its whiffs of ripe fig and sweet tropical fruit on the nose follow through onto the palate, creating a beautifully integrated and well-balanced wine.

The grapes were hand-harvested and immediately chilled to preserve the fruit flavours, before crushing and then fermentation.

Lomond, a member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI) for its conservation efforts to rehabilitate indigenous habitat, is situated in the valley of the Uilenkraal River, about 8 kilometres from the sea as the crow flies, and is located at a most southerly latitude - 34˚ 34˚ south

The Lomond 2009 Pincushion Sauvignon Blanc is available at leading liquor outlets for around R100 per 750ml bottle.
