Egoli Gas, the energy-vein that runs through Johannesburg!

Egoli Gas (Pty) Ltd, the sole licensed piped natural gas distributor in the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan supplies natural gas to an excess of 7,500 consumers.

HISTORY

The history of Egoli Gas echoes the history of the great city of Johannesburg

The first "town gas" was supplied on 23 June 1892 from a site on President Street.

The gas concession was given to the Johannesburg Lighting Co. Ltd. In 1992 the
Company, then known as Metro Gas, closed down the gas manufacturing plant and started but purchasing its entire gas requirement from Sasol.

August 2000 marked the first successful privatisation of a council-owned facility
when the Metro Gas business was sold to Egoli Gas (Proprietary) Limited.

The gas that is supplied today is no longer extracted from coal. In 2004 the conversion to natural gas occurred. Sasol Gas supplies piped natural gas via high-pressure pipelines from the Temane Fields in Northern Mozambique to our 5 inlet stations.
