Durban accomodation shows increase
Bookings in the Durban accommodation industry have shown a slight increase, the Durban Chamber of Commerce said on Wednesday. This was after the Durban Chamber of Commerce launched a campaign to boost booking following an outcry fromhoteliers struggling to get bookings for June.Durban Chamber of Commerce tourism manager Jane Pillay said bookings seemed to have picked up even though she did not have figures.Pillay said most people wanting accommodation were calling the hotels and guesthouses directly to make their bookings.
Earlier in June, the Durban Chamber of Commerce launched the durbanlastminute campaign to lure more tourists to the city. Durban hoteliers complained that their facilities had 15% occupancy rather than the 60 to 65% occupancy rate usually experienced during the June holiday. There was a perception that Durban was fully booked ahead of the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup. Pillay said there were no issues on match days, and non-match days were now also starting to fill up.
Hotels and guest houses have been encouraged to register their establishments on the last minute website. The campaign features billboard and television advertisements with bikini-clad models posted at intersections in Johannesburg promoting Durban as a seaside holiday destination.
